International expansion

Amazon international expansion readiness checklist

Compare demand, eligibility, product requirements, landed economics and local operations before launching in another Amazon marketplace.

Choose the next marketplace by the product's readiness and economics. A large audience is useful only if the business can supply, support and sell the product there. Amazon's Global Selling guidance distinguishes regional and country arrangements and highlights the operational work involved.1

Start with a short market comparison. Use evidence for demand, competition, expected net price, delivery cost and the team's ability to support customers.

Confirm the seller and product route

Check registration eligibility for the actual business. Do not assume a new company is always required. Amazon explains that international businesses can sell to US customers through supported routes; a US LLC is not a universal prerequisite.2

Review product-category restrictions, documentation and destination requirements separately. For in-scope European products, the EU's General Product Safety Regulation needs appropriate consideration.3 Other product-specific obligations may also apply. Use qualified local review for legal and tax requirements instead of treating a general launch checklist as clearance.

Translate the buying decision

Localise the actual customer questions: measurements, compatibility, usage, included items and expectations. Literal translation can miss the phrases customers use when searching. Amazon Ads provides guidance on keyword targeting outside the US.4

Assign a competent language reviewer. Check product facts, search intent and advertising claims together. Do not imply local support in a language the team cannot service after the order.

Calculate the destination economics

Model the expected selling price, product cost, transport, marketplace fees, fulfilment, returns, currency exposure and applicable taxes consistently. Identify which values are quotations and which are assumptions. Review the timing of cash payments as well as contribution per order.

For illustration, a product with a strong home-market margin might need different packaging and a more expensive return route abroad. The expansion decision should incorporate those changes before advertising begins. One successful marketplace does not establish the economics of another.

Assign operational ownership

Decide who maintains listings, monitors stock, changes prices, reviews notices and answers customer-service questions. Document the fulfilment and return model. Amazon's Europe expansion guide explains relevant regional considerations, but programme eligibility and obligations must be checked for the seller's arrangement.5

Create a readiness record with a named owner, evidence and status for each dependency. Leave unresolved requirements visible. A launch date should follow the critical dependencies rather than conceal them.

Run a controlled first release

Select a manageable product group with complete data and a clear replenishment plan. Agree what evidence would support expansion, what would require a change and what would stop the test. Use actual contribution, customer issues and operational capacity alongside sales.

Ecomtik's marketplace expansion service can be scoped around that decision and launch process. Before comparing countries, review the launch-budget guide and build the same cost model for each candidate.
